What genre is your media text?
Our genre which we are focusing on to create a music video
on is House. The music video which I studied showed an 80’s vibe through the
different elements of Mise-En-Scene.
How does the genre
make you feel?
This makes the audience think of how the 80’s music was
portrayed to members of the public. Music videos for House music tend to have
strong themes of dancing, love, sexuality, alcohol and drugs. House music makes
the audience feel happier and it can often lead to them wanting to go out and
have fun as it makes audiences want to live for the moment not for the future.
Due to the large amount of dancing within the music video +1 makes the audience
want to get up and dance.
What are the main
codes and conventions of the genre?
Within House music videos there are a few codes and
conventions which are largely focused on they are:
- Clothes
- Dance
Clothes
Clothes within House music videos usually has woman dressed
in clothes that can expose their bodies in order to attract male attention
(Laura Malvey – The Male Gaze) which would increase the male viewers of the
music video.
Dance
In a lot of 80’s music videos there is a large focus on the
dance within the music video. For example through the music video of ‘+1’ shows
continuous dancing throughout the music video this creates a positive feel towards the music video because dancing often creates happiness which shows the emotional pleasures within the music video.
Lighting
In the music video of '+1' there is different colour lighting which changes as different keys on the keyboard are tapped by the person using it. This looks good as it shows the different keys on the keyboard being changed which creates a disco lighting which creates a image of the 80's with the bright neon lights.
Through this research I have learnt the different elements which make up a house music video and through this I will ensure that the costume and lighting for our house music video will meet all the codes and conventions of a house music video.
